Palm Treo to Use Windows (Folo) Microsoft to Start Own System for Selling Ads on Internet Searches

September 26, 2005

Microsoft will achieve one of its longest-held ambitions Monday when the rival Palm Computing announces that it will use Windows Mobile software in a new version of its popular cellphone and organizer, the Treo, John Markoff of The New York Times reported from San Francisco.

Verizon Wireless, which will market the phone, will join in the announcement, according to several people involved. Executives at the companies declined to comment.

One feature not immediately available in the Windows software, however, will be the ability to push e-mail to users as it arrives, rather than requiring them to fetch it, said an industry expert with detailed knowledge of the announcement. Such a feature would be necessary to make the system a direct competitor to Research in Motion’s BlackBerry.
