Toshiba Welcomes Microsoft, Intel Decisions to Support HD-DVD

Sep. 27--TOKYO -- Toshiba Corp. and other supporters of the high-definition DVD format for next-generation DVD products welcomed Tuesday reported decisions by Microsoft Corp. and Intel Corp. to back the format.

The two U.S. personal computer kingpins' decisions would allow the diffusion of HD-DVD to gain momentum, Toshiba said.

"The announcement from these two leading information technology companies reconfirms the design advantages of the HD-DVD format and its achievement of maximum compatibility between audio-video and personal computer products," said Hisashi Yamada of Toshiba's digital media network company.

DVD manufacturer Memory-Tech Corp., NEC Corp. and Sanyo Electric Co. joined Toshiba in welcoming the decisions.

But the Microsoft and Intel decisions are expected to complicate a battle over the next-generation DVD format between the Toshiba-led HD-DVD camp and a rival group, which is led by Sony Corp. and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. to support the Blu-ray format, industry sources said.

Personal computer manufacturers Apple Computer Inc., Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Inc. have joined Sony and Matsushita in promoting Blu-ray.
