Rental Car Sites to Be Consolidated

By Bob Driehaus

Despite the uncertainty associated with the bankruptcy, the Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport anticipates a continued high demand for rental cars for fliers and is pursuing a plan to consolidate its rental car facilities.

Airport officials are talking with rental car companies and airport board members about a plan to charge a $3.50 a day Customer Facility Charge per car to pay for the three-phase, $60 million project.

The first phase, a new center for airport buses, tentatively is scheduled to be built in 2007. Subsequent phases would be built as money is collected and demand dictated.

The plan would create a new facility for all rental car companies that use the airport, including common kiosks for all the companies and one large lot for all the rental cars.

The new facility would be built north of the middle north-south runway.

Existing lots near the airport terminals are in the path of the planned rerouted airport road that would be built as part of the airport's long-term master plan.

Airport Finance Director Sheila Hammons told the board's airport committee that demand for rental cars is expected to remain steady in the short-term because Delta's service cuts are not predicted to eat into the number of fliers who begin or end their destination at the airport.

Most of the lost passengers will be those connecting through the airport and not using rental cars, she and other officials believe.
