US Airways emerges from bankruptcy, closes merger with American West

WASHINGTON, Sept. 27 (Xinhua) -- US Airways formally emerged on Tuesday from bankruptcy protection and closed its merger with a low- cost carrier, the airline announced.

The nation's seventh-largest carrier completed its merger with low-cost carrier America West on Tuesday. The merger creates the fifth largest US airline, according to the two airlines.

"Today we start a new chapter in aviation history," said Doug Parker, chairman and chief executive of the merged company and previously head of America West.

The merged group will operate under the US Airways name, but America West and US Airways will maintain separate operating certificates for the next two to three years, the airlines said.

The airlines said that the new airline will be "the nation's largest full-service, low-cost, low-fare airline."

Along with United Airlines, Delta and Northwest, US Airways was one of four major US airlines in bankruptcy protection. Delta and Northwest filed for protection on Sept. 14 this year. United Airlines filed for bankruptcy protection in 2002.

US Airways filed for bankruptcy protection for the second time in September 2004. Its first filing took place in August 2002 after a proposed merger with UAL Corp.'s United Airlines had been rejected by federal regulators.
