Heathrow Catering Workers Vote to OK Deal
LONDON – Catering staff at Heathrow Airport voted Wednesday to accept a deal ending a dispute that grounded hundreds of British Airways PLC flights last month, their union said.
The Transport and General Workers’ Union said members at a mass meeting voted overwhelmingly by a show of hands to accept the deal with U.S.-owned company ad f0 .
Gate Gourmet fired 660 employees for staging an unauthorized walkout over working conditions in London last month. On Aug. 11, British Airways ground crew at Heathrow walked out in sympathy, leading the airline to cancel hundreds of flights, stranding more than 100,000 travelers.
Under the terms of the deal, about 400 of the fired workers will get their jobs back and another 172 will accept voluntary layoffs.
