West Corp. To Train People Needed for 200 Spots

Sep. 28--NILES -- West Corp. says it is offering a unique computer training program to find prospective employees, and to help those who are looking for other work.

"We are not a telemarketer. This is truly customer service," Patricia A. Cascarelli, director of human resources at West's Niles facility, said Tuesday.

The local center employs 800 and has about 200 vacancies to fill.

To help fill the slots, West is offering one-day, four-hour computer learning classes starting at 9 a.m. for four Saturdays beginning Oct. 8 for people age 18 and older.

One of the reasons for the classes, Cascarelli explained, is because there is a gap between what skills are needed and those seeking jobs at West.

The free classes will be at the West center, 5185 Youngstown-Warren Road. To reserve a spot, call (330) 574-0507.

Earnest Hunter, center training manager, explained that the training will include what's needed to be comfortable in using and navigating a computer.

Carolyn Smolko, who is also involved in the training, said if the trainees aren't interested in a job at West, they can take the learned skills and seek other jobs.

A breakdown

Fifty percent of the employees in Niles are from Trumbull County and 40 percent from Mahoning County, with the balance from Portage and Mercer counties.

They are paid from $8.25 to $9.60 hourly, with incentives. Health care is available after 90 days.

Full- and part-time jobs are available with flexible shifts, Cascarelli explained.

Many employees come from social service agencies such as Job and Family Services and Goodwill Industries.

The Niles center provides customer service to two corporations: Cingular Wireless and Dish Network.

"We're the technical supporters," Cascarelli said, pointing out that Cingular and Dish have outsourced their support to West.

For example, a customer who is having a problem with programming or pay-for-view contacts West for the answers. If a Cingular customer has a billing question, the customer calls West.

Although West advertises in local newspapers, "word of mouth is our biggest recruiter," Cascarelli said.

"Our people are our best sellers," she added.
