Sep. 28--AT&T said Tuesday that it will open a San Jose data center to double its Bay Area capacity for handling customers' Internet traffic.
The company declined to say how many employees the data center will have when it opens in November.
The center will "host" data traffic for thousands of businesses in Silicon Valley and the Bay Area. Demand for such capacity is increasing as individuals and businesses do more and more through computers and the Internet.
AT&T already has a Redwood City data center and two others in Southern California. The Redwood City facility has several dozen employees, who are on-site 24 hours a day year-round.
AT&T also said it is opening a data center in Shanghai, China. With the addition of the San Jose and Shanghai centers, the Bedminster, N.J.-based company will have 28 data centers worldwide.
"Overall there is an increasing amount of hosting that more businesses are doing," said Gordon Diamond, spokesman for the company, explaining the growing need for hosting capacity. "We're one of the largest carriers of IP traffic."
Every 3 1/2 minutes, AT&T's data network transmits the equivalent of the entire Library of Congress, Diamond said.
For example, video game maker Konami, creator of "Dance Dance Revolution," uses an AT&T Internet data center so its gaming customers can play video games online simultaneously anywhere in the world.
Because of security issues, the company generally does not release the exact location of its centers nor the names of its customers.
