Aberdeen Police Revamp Web Site

By Mike Corpos, American News, Aberdeen, S.D.

Sep. 29--Aberdonians now have better access to police department information and can give input on police issues on the Aberdeen Police Department's Web site.

Chief Don Lanpher Jr. said the additions and a redesign of the Web site are part of the department's efforts to be more proactive in fighting crime and providing helpful information. The site's address is www.aberdeen.sd.us/ police/police.html.

Citizens also have the opportunity to sound off on police department issues and provide suggestions by following the "Citizen Survey" link on the main page. The survey allows people to rate their contact with Aberdeen police, as well as answer questions about neighborhood safety and identify what they feel are the most serious police-related problems in the community.

Also, under the "Programs" link on the main page, new information on crime prevention and the Drug Abuse Resistance Education program are available.

-- Under "Crime Prevention," the Web site offers a litany of tips, Lanpher said, on everything from preventing vehicle theft to home burglary. Citizens are also given options for how to protect their property.

-- Under the D.A.R.E. program page, the Web site now offers information on different types of drugs, and also gives a great deal of information for parents and others on recognizing the signs of drug and alcohol abuse. It gives tips on how to prevent drug use, as well as what to do if you suspect your child is on drugs.

Lanpher said the idea for revamping the Web site came from his previous department. Before joining the Aberdeen Police Department last summer, Lanpher was a captain with the Moscow, Idaho, police department.

"We had a nice Web site there, and I thought we could improve on (ours)," he said.

In the coming days and months, Lanpher said additional changes will be made, including a new appearance to the main page, and the addition of information on bicycle safety and laws.

The chief said the bicycle section is still in the works, but once he's done researching and writing it up, it will be posted.
