Sep. 30--The MTA on Thursday approved a $1.3 million contract to buy digital security cameras for buses, but an employee union objected to having an outside firm do the installation work.
The Amalgamated Transit Union said its mechanics at the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are qualified to install the systems.
"We can do this work," ATU President Neil Silver told the board. "This is not difficult work for us to do."
MTA staff had concerns that the work be completed as quickly as possible, and wanted the work done during night shifts when union workers have other duties.
But staff said the details of installation could be worked out later, and agreed to work with the union on the issue.
The cameras for 267 buses are part of continued efforts to upgrade security after the terrorist attacks on the London transit system this summer.
The cameras would enable real-time, remote monitoring of buses that is already available on most of the 2,200-bus fleet.
The board also awarded a $2 million contract for enhanced security cameras on the rail system.
