Oct. 4–TOKYO — Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Hitachi Ltd. and Pioneer Corp. have jointly developed a plasma display panel whose power use is half that of current PDPs, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported Tuesday.

The three manufacturers hope to market the new display panel in two to three years, the report said, the three plan to unveil the new panel at the Ceatec trade show opening Tuesday at Makuhari Messe in Chiba.

Although PDPs normally consume more power than liquid crystal displays because of higher numbers of light-emitting elements, the three companies succeeded in developing the new display panel by reviewing the pixel structure and developing a new mechanism that boosts light-emitting efficiency, the report said.
