Verizon Fiber-Optic Line Cut Disrupts Service

Oct. 4--The cause of an underground fiber-cut seven miles north of Jacksonville remained a mystery even after the lines were back up after the 3 1/2-hour outage, said Bob Elek, Verizon spokesperson.
The line was cut just inside the Georgia state line.
Typically, such cuts happen when there's a road project or water project going on, Elek said.
Under normal circumstances, there's a backup, or redundant system, set up to handle such emergencies.
"Unfortunately, the backup system runs through New Orleans and it's been destroyed so there is no backup system," Elek said.
The line cut happened on a portion of the network that Verizon leases from one of a number of long-haul carriers.
Elek said he was unable to identify the name of the carrier, but thought it was likely the carrier served other customers besides Verizon's.
"They are the ones out there in the field fixing it," he said in the afternoon before the fix was reported to him.
Verizon has more than 2 million customers in Florida. More than 100,000 are likely affected, mostly in their ability to reach the Internet.
Verizon did not think the fiber-cut affected voice services like phone and cell, although it might have impacted some long-distance calls, Elek said.
"Network outages, whether caused by cable cuts or something else, happen fairly frequently," he said.
"We've had outages in Bradenton before. They're not always as significant as this. It just happens to be from a distance."
