Libraries Still Able to Subscribe to the EBSCO K-12 Reference Package and Britannica Online School Edition through ESC-20

Austin, TX (PRWEB) September 06, 2011

Budget cuts may have caused changes to the K-12 Databases Program, but schools are still able to subscribe to the EBSCO K-12 Reference Package and the Britannica Online School Edition through an opt-in program offered through a partnership between the Texas State Library and Archives Commission and Education Service Center, Region 20 (ESC-20). While the state is no longer funding the program, state-negotiated pricing for the online research resources from EBSCO Publishing and Britannica is available to all Texas K-12 public and public charter schools. The program provides more than 40 databases to schools throughout the state. Schools will be able to opt-in for 49 cents per student for EBSCO and 37 centers per student for Britannica.

Director and Librarian of Texas State Library and Archives Commission Peggy Rudd says research knowledge and skills are required of students at all grade levels in Texas. âœThe K-12 databases are essential tools that support information literacy and give students the 21st Century skills they will need to prosper in school, the workforce, and life. These authoritative, reliable e-resources in the hands of talented teachers and librarians can nurture a lifelong love of learning and discovery in our children.â

The Texas State Library and Archives Commission has negotiated the low per student fee which has actually rolled prices back to the 2007 district cost for these same resources. An order form is available at: http://web.esc20.net/access. Libraries currently subscribing to the EBSCO package through the state need to submit the form to ESC-20 before September 15th in order to arrange for the continued service without any interruption in current access. Logins will remain the same under the new opt-in program and packages may be ordered at the district level.

Schools subscribing to the K-12 Databases opt-in program will receive access to numerous outreach and training materials including a new Everyday Research in the Classroom teacher online course with accompanying Student Research Notebooksâ”elementary, middle school and high school.

The EBSCO K-12 Reference Package provides access to 34 research databases, a comprehensive collection of full-text reference resources along with professional development collections for educators plus age-appropriate interfaces such as: Student Research Centerâ“¢, Searchasaurusâ“¢, Kids Searchâ“¢, and EBSCOhost® as well as subject-specific searching for resources such as Consumer Health Completeâ“¢ and Business Source® Complete.

Britannica Online School Edition includes age-appropriate interfaces such as: Learning Zone, Britannica Elementary, Britannica Middle School, Britannica High School, Britannica Spanish Reference Center and Global Reference Center.
