New site causing controversy with its brutally honest, unbiased electronic cigarette reviews

New York, NY (PRWEB) September 07, 2011

A new web site, http://www.Top5ElectronicCigarettes.com is creating controversy in the nascent e-cigarette industry with its unbiased reviews of twenty leading electronic cigarette brands. The good, the bad, and the ugly are all revealed in a no-nonsense manner that sets the site apart from its competitors. However, this approach has not been well received by a number of e-cigarette companies that have rescinded their affiliate agreements with the site and in some cases, threatened legal action.

“The truth is that e-cigarette review sites exist because affiliate programs pay a commission for referrals,” said Mr. Chris Shaw, an editor with Top 5. He continued, “Unfortunately, the system rewards positively-biased reviews, because affiliates earn a commission only if a referred visitor makes a purchase. This is explains why the vast majority of electronic cigarette reviews extoll the virtues a brand while glossing over any negative aspects. We believe this approach to be both harmful to the industry and a disservice to consumers.

“Top5ElectronicCigarettes.com is also an affiliate site, but we decided at its inception that our unique differentiating factor would be providing shoppers with brutally honest reviews and allowing the chips to fall where they may. Although negative reviews and poor rankings have angered a number of the major e-cigarette brands, we believe our lack of bias to be the predominant reason for the popularity of our site with consumers.”

He continued, “It’s almost laughable that some of the worst tasting and poorest performing electronic cigarette brands regularly receive stellar reviews owing to the strength of their marketing efforts and affiliate programs. If weâve learned anything at Top 5, it is that in the world of e-cigarettes, high prices are not necessarily indicative of high quality, as some of the lowest priced brands have proven to be amongst the best performing.”

Mr. Shaw added, “We order and pay for starter kits the same way a consumer would. We do not request review samples. This allows us to produce truly unbiased reviews and further sets us apart from our competition. We are not and never will be sponsored by or beholden to any particular brand.”

Ersatz reviews and review sites have become so prevalent (and problematic) that a group of researchers at Cornell University recently published a paper that explores the possibilities of programmatically detecting fake reviews. Encouragingly, their algorithmâs initial success rate was approximately 90%. Google, Amazon, and TripAdvisor have all expressed interest in the project. However, until the use of such algorithms becomes widespread, consumers must continue to abide by the age old adage, “let the buyer beware.”
