Microsoft’s Online Services Offline For Over 2 Hours

Microsoft's online services like Hotmail, Office 365 and SkyDrive were unable to be accessed overnight.

"If you've been trying to use Hotmail, SkyDrive, or our other Live properties in the last couple of hours you may have noticed problems accessing our services," Microsoft said in a blog post.

The company said it is still analyzing the cause of the problem, but it appeared to be related to the Internet's DNS address system.

Microsoft's Office 365 is the company's alternative to Google's suite of online applications.  Its service went offline briefly in mid-August as well, which was less than two months after it launched.

The company said the most recent collapse of its online services lasted for two-and-a-half hours.

Microsoft said in a blog post: "We have completed propagating our DNS configuration changes around the world, and have restored service for most customers."

The DNS is responsible for translating URL web addresses into the Internet's native system of IP addresses.
