The world's largest personal computer maker HP on Monday introduced two more powerful media center personal computers, hoping the machines that also function as a TV set and a tape recorder could boost its PC sales in a sluggish market.
With higher processor speed, the new HP Media Center PCs 864n and 854n enable users to record live TV -- similar to personal video recorders -- burn the content to the DVD writer, and then watch the DVD in many standard home DVD players.
Additionally, both HP Media Center PCs feature a six-in-one media card reader, improved graphics and larger hard drives than previous models, the HP said.
The HP's media center PCs, using Microsoft Windows XP Media Center Edition, allow users to enjoy a variety of digital entertainment features, including recording and pausing live television, a free electronic program guide and the ability to download, alter or burn their own digital music, digital photos, digital video and DVDs.
The HP Media Center PC 864n comes with an Intel Pentium 4 2.66 GHz processor, more than 100 hours of recorded TV storage with a 160 GB hard drive and 512 MB DDR SDRAM. It is also equipped with 200- watt speakers and a 5.1 multi-channel sound card.
The HP Media Center PC 854n features an Intel Pentium 4 2.53 GHz processor, 512 MB DDR memory and 80 hours of recorded TV storage capacity on a 120-GB hard drive.
Both models offer more than double the graphics memory than previously available with a 128 MB NVIDIA GeForce4 MX 440 graphics card, providing users with improved graphics experience whether watching DVDs, editing video or playing favorite 3D PC games.
The HP Media Center PCs, to hit store shelves on March 16, include a remote control and a variety of valuable software including the HP Pictures and Video Toolkit, making it easy to download, save, edit and share digital photos and home movies, the HP said.
