Award-winning radio presenter George Jones is being axed from his BBC radio show. The curtains are set to come down on George's popular afternoon show Just Jones in 2006, 20 years after he first began broadcasting for the BBC.It is understood the move is part of a wider shake-up of Radio Ulster's daytime schedule, which will allow fresh opportunities for "new and emerging talent".George started his career at BBC Radio Ulster in 1985, taking over from Paul Clarke in the afternoons. He then presented a weekend slot which included the children-only show G-Jam

. He has been presenting the late afternoon slot on Radio Ulster every weekday since 1990.In 1991 he won Best Regional UK Presenter at the Sony Awards.George said: "My career with BBC Radio Ulster has been great fun and I'm extremely grateful to all the listeners who have supported me over the last 20 years."In many ways I'll be sorry to leave next year but I'm very excited about the projects I'm now planning for the future."Anna Carragher, BBC NI controller, said: "George has had a rich history with BBC Radio Ulster and I'm sure his fans will join us in wishing him all the best for the future."Susan Lovell, managing editor of Radio Ulster, said: "Making changes to BBC Radio Ulster's schedule helps us continue to be a dynamic station offering premium programmes, the very best in talent and plenty of choice for our listeners."Last year saw the arrival of Stephen Nolan in the morning slot, taking over from John Bennett, as well as the introduction of The Saturday Magazine and The John Daly Radio Show into the station's Saturday schedule.Earlier this year UTV announced the end of the Kelly show after 17 years. But presenter Gerry Kelly will be back next year with a weekly series as well as a Sunday show on UTV's new radio station U105.
