The University of Toledo (UT) was recently designated a National University Research Center. The US Department of Transportation has awarded UT $2 million over a four-year period to advance stateof- the-art transportation research and expand the workforce of transportation professionals.
"This designation will help push Toledo to the forefront as a premier transportation center," stated Dr. Frank Calzonetti, UT vice provost for research and economic development. "The idea is to use all of the region's intermodal facilities to promote economic development by augmenting the transportation potential of the city."
UT will play a leadership role in developing improved intermodal supply-chain systems and alternative transportation methods and technologies such as hybrid-electric, fuel cell, and bio-diesel technologies.
"The support of the board of UT's Intermodal Transportation Institute was vital in receiving this designation," stated institute director Dr. Mark Vonderembse.
James H. Hartung, president of the Toledo-Lucas County Port Authority and chairman of UT's Intermodal Transportation Institute, echoed Vonderembse's sentiment, and both highlighted their gratitude to TAGNO, TMACOG, and other private transportation efforts in the area. Vonderembse also thanked Ed Nagle, CEO of Nagle Companies, for his assistance.
"Toledo is a national laboratory for transportation research," Hartung stated.
"With the air, sea, rail, and road transportation systems all interacting in this region, research into the transfer of cargo from one mode to another can be carried out without ever leaving the county."
"In addition to the integral role played by the Port Authority and our many local and regional partners," stated UT president Dan Johnson, "I want to express my deep appreciation to Ohio Senators George Voinovich and Mike DeWine and Toledo Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur for their work in helping to secure the funds to establish the center. This is a major step forward for The University of Toledo and the transportation industry in northwest Ohio."
