Xerox Office Systems Become Industry's First Color Devices to Earn Internationally Recognized Standard for Security

Xerox Corporation (NYSE: XRX) has earned the international standard in information security for six of its color copiers and advanced multifunction systems, making it the only document services company that can give offices both high-quality color documents and high-level security validated by independent experts.
Called the Common Criteria Certification, this standard was developed by the National Information Assurance Partnership and is an important distinction for customers in the government, military, healthcare, legal and financial sectors required to comply with strict security regulations.
The Xerox WorkCentre(R) Pro C2128, C2636 and C3545 advanced color multifunction systems and CopyCentre(R) C2128, C2636 and C3545 digital color copiers join 12 Xerox black-and-white office products certified by NIAP, a U.S. government initiative created to meet the security testing needs of IT consumers and companies. Unlike vendors that only submit certain components for testing, Xerox had NIAP evaluate its entire multifunction system to ensure all critical subsystems are secure.
"Customers can now capitalize on the impact of color while trusting that their highly sensitive documents and intellectual property will remain secure," said Tim Williams, president, Xerox Office Group. "This certification is key not only to the public sector but also to private industries such as healthcare and legal that are dealing with increasing regulations and looking for assurances that a product is secure."
Most IT products used within the U.S. Department of Defense, any military branch, or buildings such as the Pentagon or air bases must carry Common Criteria Certification to ensure IT systems maintain a proper level of confidentiality, integrity and authentication.
To receive Common Criteria Certification, office products need to go through rigorous evaluation and be tested by NIAP-approved Common Criteria Testing Laboratories. Specifically, NIAP certified the following features and options:
-- Image Overwrite Option - The Image Overwrite Security Option electronically "shreds" data stored on the machine's hard disk during routine job processing. Electronic removal of data can be performed automatically after every job or when a person specifically requests it.
-- Embedded Fax - While firewalls prevent unauthorized access to a customer's system through the network connection, unprotected fax connections in multifunction devices can be a back door into the network. Xerox is the only manufacturer that can offer a Common Criteria certified product that assures complete separation of the fax telephone line and the network connection.
Xerox products offer a variety of other security features and options that allow customers to restrict access, track usage and protect confidential information that flows through various Xerox CopyCentre digital copiers, WorkCentre multifunction devices and WorkCentre Pro advanced multifunction systems. Those features include:
-- An internal auditron requires users to enter a code for walk-up copying. This enables administrators to track usage at an account or department level.
-- The Network Authentication feature can restrict workers' access to scan, e-mail and fax features by validating user names and passwords prior to use.
-- Xerox Secure Print holds confidential jobs at the device until the owner enters a personal number to release them.
-- Administrative security capabilities such as password-protected device access and IP restrictions on Web pages ensure only authorized personnel can manage device configuration.
-- The configurable network services capability allows device and print protocols to be turned on and off as required to restrict network access.
The Xerox WorkCentre Pro C2128, C2636 and C3545 are advanced color multifunction systems designed for a networked office. These multifunction devices handle multiple tasks like printing, copying and scanning simultaneously without interruption. The Xerox CopyCentre C2128, C2636 and C3545 are digital color office copiers with advanced finishing options such as booklet creation and hole punching. In addition to achieving NIAP certification, these systems have earned honors from Better Buys for Business, Buyers Laboratory Inc., and Network Computing.
NIAP has previously certified the Xerox WorkCentre Pro 35, 45, 55, 65, 75 and 90 advanced multifunction systems; the WorkCentre M35, M45 and M55 copier-printers; and the CopyCentre C65, C75 and C90 high-speed digital office copiers.
