Kuwait plans to expand international airport
KUWAIT CITY, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- Kuwait has planned to expand its international airport, whose capacity will be increased "step by step" to 55 million passengers a year from 5 million in 2004, local daily Arab Times reported on Monday.
"The first step will be equipping the airport to receive 11 million passengers every year. This will be followed by the stage where the airport will be prepared to receive 20 million passengers a year," sources from Kuwaiti Civil Aviation Department were quoted as saying.
At the final phase of the expansion project, the airport's capacity to receive passengers will increase to 55 million passengers a year, added the sources.
The airport's future expansion will be introduced based on the Build-Operation-Transfer system, the sources said, indicating that the Kuwaiti government will finance the project with 200 million Kuwaiti dinars (680 million US dollars) to the company which wins the project.
The sources did not give detailed time of the project phases, but revealed that the new airport will be built at the current location of the Kuwait International Airport.
"After all other services especially the armed services are removed, the airport will be expanded," they said.
