PASSENGERS at Britain's major airports picked up last month following disruption caused by the London bombings and British Airways dispute in July and August, while Aberdeen again led growth among the three largest Scottish airports.
BAA, whose seven UK airports include the three main London sites, reported a 3 per cent increase in passengers in September on a year ago compared to 0.5 per cent in August.
Passengers at Aberdeen rose by 10 per cent to nearly 268,000 thanks to a continued recovery in North Sea helicopter traffic, oil- related business travel and new routes. The airport is now growing by 7.7 per cent year-on-year to 2.8 million passengers.
Edinburgh airport, which is grappling with flight delays caused by its high proportion of peak-hour business travel, handled almost 783,000 passengers last month - up 6.9 per cent.
Annual growth is running at 6.2 per cent to nearly 8.4 million passengers.
Glasgow remains Scotland's busiest airport but saw its growth slow to 2.1 per cent, with 901,000 passengers in September. Its annual total was up by 3.8 per cent to nearly 8.8 million.
National Air Traffic Services said its oceanic area control centre at Prestwick, which handles transatlantic flights, was the fastest-growing last month, handling 34,300 - 7.7 per cent more than a year ago.
Bmibaby has announced it will increase daily return flights between Edinburgh and Nottingham East Midlands from two to three from Monday, 31 October.
The move coincides with EasyJet withdrawing from the route after ending flights between Glasgow and Nottingham last year.
