Food prices at Beijing Airport fall 10 to 40 percent

BEIJING, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- Food and drinks prices in the two terminals of Beijing Airport fell 10 to 40 percent Monday after the airport launched a campaign to deal with the high food prices problem, the Beijing Daily reported on Tuesday.

The move aims to keep food prices at the airport at the same level as those in urban districts, an airport official was quoted as saying.

The food covered by the move includes 852 categories of food, making up half of the total, according to the report.

The price of coffee dropped the most, with the price falling by 40 percent. A cup of coffee now costs around 20 yuan (5 US dollars) compared with 88 yuan (11 dollars) four years ago. In addition, the airport cut the rental fees for restaurants and adjusted the rental fee structure in a bid help lower the cost. The airport now also allows Kentucky and other Chinese and foreign fast food giants to open outlets at the terminals to cater to different flavors of customers.

A customer told Beijing Daily that four dishes and one soup cost around 165 yuan at the airport, almost the same as the cost in the downtown area, High food prices at the airport were often complained about by passengers in the past.
