New York transit trains HAZMAT personnel to cope with subway attack
NEW YORK, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- New York City Transit is training an elite corps of workers to help emergency officials deal with possible biological or chemical terrorist attacks in the city's subway system, the authorities said Tuesday.
The volunteer HAZMAT, short for hazardous material, team would be in charge of evacuating stricken passengers, getting victims medical attention, and helping police and officials navigate the tracks.
So far, 75 supervisors and managers have completed the 40-hour training session.
According to officials with the city's transit, motormen, conductors and other rank and file personnel so far have not been trained so as to maintain normal day-to-day subway operations.
A new group of supervisors and managers started the training on Monday, they said.
About 4.5 million passengers use New York's subways daily, and the New York metro area transit system of commuter rails, subways and buses is the largest in the country.
