FREMONT, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 24, 2003--
T1 Technical Subcommittee Working Group, T1E1.4, Selects DMT as
the VDSL Standard
Ikanos Communications, developer of Smart Silicon for Profitable Broadband(TM), today announced it will demonstrate an Ethernet in the First Mile (EFM) solution at an aggregate rate of 150 Mbps over a single copper pair using Very-High-Bit-Rate Digital Subscriber Line-Discrete Multi-Tone (VDSL-DMT). The demo will take place at the Delta Ottawa Hotel and Suites in Ottawa, Canada on June 24-25, 2003.
Ethernet over VDSL-DMT offers advantages similar to Traditional 10/100 Base-T Ethernet:
-- DMT technology lowers the cost of solutions for mass
deployments
-- DMT proves to be a true plug and play solution and lowers
operational expenses
-- A large group of industry-leading chip and system vendors
support DMT
-- DMT enables the evolution of EFM from 10 Mbps to 100 Mbps
-- DMT achieves
-- interoperability
-- DMT is an industry proven technology with over 41 million
subscribers worldwide
"I am encouraged to see the introduction of a 100 Mbps silicon solution supporting Ethernet in the First Mile applications," said Howard Frazier, chairman of the IEEE's 802.3ah EFM Task Force. "We're seeing a great deal of progress in a very short time. The ability to support Ethernet over a wide range of rate and reach combinations is a significant enabler for mass deployment of EFM broadband networks."
"Equipment vendors worldwide are supporting the operators' decision to use DMT as the standard for VDSL," said Behrooz Rezvani, PhD, founder and chief technical officer of Ikanos. "The VDSL Olympics test results for EFM have clearly proven that DMT has outperformed QAM at the fundamental technology level."
About Ikanos Communications
Founded in 1999 and based in Silicon Valley, Ikanos Communications has created a new class of silicon that serves the entire range of worldwide broadband markets and applications with a single programmable chipset. Ikanos' industry-leading A/VDSL chipset solution includes the SmartLeap(TM) family for Broadband Access Concentrators and the CleverConnect(TM) for Customer Premise Equipment. These chipsets enable equipment vendors to serve many different carriers worldwide while slashing time to market and lowering development, manufacturing, and inventory costs. Ikanos also offers the Ikanos Programmable Operating System(TM) (iPOS), which consists of firmware and APIs. iPOS enables equipment vendors to dynamically configure LRFE, EFM, VDSL-DMT 998, VDSL-DMT 997, VDSL-DMT Flex, ADSL, ADSL2, and ADSL2+ on Ikanos chipsets.
Ikanos Communications provides comprehensive offerings that encompass silicon, embedded software, reference designs, high-level APIs, and extensive documentation. Ikanos is a member of, and contributes to, ANSI, the IEEE 802.3 EFM Study Group, DSL Forum, and ITU-T.
