RESTON, Va., Oct. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Computer Enterprises, Inc. (GCE) announced today that the General Services Administration (GSA) has exercised four options years under the original contract for the ongoing operation of the Federal Procurement Data System -- Next Generation (FPDS-NG). GCE has developed, owned and operated the system since the initial award in April, 2003.

The innovative FPDS-NG system allows for millions of procurement transactions from across the federal government to be recorded and reported upon in real-time. Federal procurement systems previously relied on batch interfaces to provide procurement data to FPDS. "FPDS-NG has accomplished two remarkable tasks. More than one hundred federal government agencies are now integrated with FPDS-NG and providing procurement spending information in real time," commented Nancy Gunsauls, GCE's program manager for GSA. "In turn, FPDS-NG has given both the government and the public immediate visibility and accessibility into the spending of the federal government. The old process of waiting for procurement spending to be published on disk is long gone."

The technical underpinnings of FPDS-NG have been a key factor of the system's success. By employing a services-oriented architecture with web services, open standards, and XML, GCE was able to achieve an unprecedented level of interoperability between government agencies. "Bringing more than one hundred agencies on to FPDS-NG is no small feat in and of itself," noted Ray Muslimani, president of GCE. "We've achieved an incredible level of success with this program and have met GSA's goals of increasing the timeliness and accuracy of federal procurement data, while achieving a cost savings for the taxpayers."

FPDS-NG is unlike any other system in the federal government today and demonstrates that real-time interoperability between government agencies can be a reality. "GCE excels at leveraging emerging technologies for tangible benefits like cost savings, process efficiencies, and increased accessibility," added Muslimani. "This contract extension is a testament to the commitment of a small company that brought an innovative technical approach to a federal challenge."

In the prior year, GCE focused on integrating more than one hundred agencies with FPDS-NG. "In the coming year, we look forward to the addition of the Department of Defense to our user community," Gunsauls continued. "And, as the system continues to grow in sheer volume and number of users, we also will continue to enhance the ease-of-use of the system for our customers with new tools and functionality."

FPDS-NG is available free worldwide to anyone with access to the world wide web at https://www.fpds.gov/. At this site, users can view recent reports on Hurricanes Katrina and Rita spending, as well as find access to other procurement and spending-related information.
