In-Stat/MDR Reports Gigabit Ethernet Video Routers to Make All Digital Cable TV a Reality

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--June 30, 2003--As "all digital" Cable TV systems begin to appear over the next five years, the nascent market for Gigabit Ethernet video routers used in digital Cable TV headends will begin to gain some traction, reports In-Stat/MDR (http://www.instat.com). The high-tech market research firm reports that this market is expected to take off during 2005 and explode into 2006 and 2007, accounting for $455 million during 2007. Gigabit Ethernet video routers will also find customers among satellite networks, Video-over-DSL deployments, government agencies, major enterprises, distance learning and public safety markets.
"Everything that is upstream from the actual coaxial cable is likely to use Gigabit Ethernet technologies, simply because it is fast enough to provide all of the services needed for digital Cable TV, and it is robust, being used in carrier class telecommunications services," said Gerry Kaufhold, a principal analyst at In-Stat/MDR. "In addition, it's becoming low-cost, because Intel, and others, are driving Gigabit Ethernet into very high volume applications."
In-Stat/MDR has also found that:
-- Companies, such as Scientific Atlanta, Harmonic, BigBand
Networks, IP Unity, Path 1 Technologies and SkyStream Networks
are pioneering Gigabit Ethernet video routers. Tandberg
Television is working with Microsoft's Windows Media 9 Series,
as a way to make it easier for Cable TV companies to get more
signals out to more subscribers.
-- North American Cable TV systems segment their large systems
into zones of operation, and will use Gigabit Ethernet video
routers to replicate programming across multiple zones, use
Packet Splicing to insert local advertising, handle High
Definition programming feeds, and provide Broadcast On Demand
for sporting events.
-- Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), that include Gigabit
Ethernet cores, provide the technology base that enables
Gigabit Ethernet video routers to deliver amazing performance,
at low cost, on extremely flexible platforms.
-- Pace's ultra-low-cost Digital Cable Adapter will enable all
digital Cable TV systems to appear in a few years, especially
in North America, then in Europe, then Asia.
-- Gigabit Ethernet video routers will also find markets with
large enterprises, telephone service providers that are
expanding into video, and government agencies.
The report, "Gigabit Ethernet Cable TV Video Routers To Set Example For The Digital TV World" (#IN030690MB) provides in-depth discussion, and forecasts, for the number of digital Cable TV set top boxes deployed, by region, by year, as well as forecasts for the number of QAM "streams" being deployed using Gigabit Ethernet video routers, by region, by year.
