Posted on: Friday, 14 October 2005, 21:00 CDT

If you failed to vote in the primary Tuesday, you have another chance to participate in democracy. But today is the last day you can register to vote for the general election Nov. 8.

You can vote if youre 18 or older, a U.S. citizen and a resident of the county at least 30 days before the election. This includes college students living in dormitories who do not vote at home.

Also, if youve recently moved, you should complete a registration form to update your information.

To register, fill out a copy of the state voter registration form, which you can get at a board of elections office, libraries, public high schools and online at www.sboe.state.nc.us. The registration must be postmarked or hand-delivered by today.

You should receive a voter registration card in the mail within a week or two of submitting your application. If you dont receive a card, call your county elections office to verify your registration.

Information: Guilford County, 641-3836; Alamance County, 570- 6755; Randolph County, 318-6900; Rockingham County, 342-8107 .

Thief didnt stop till he got caught; signs still missing

DURHAM -- A Durham prowler just couldnt stop.

In a crime captured on video, he cut through a security fence at a sign shop and stole 50 stop signs, Durham police Investigator N.M. Cloninger said. The signs were worth $1,250.

Investigators looking for the missing signs Wednesday got a tip from a resident who spied something suspicious. The crime-fighter had followed a man who was pushing a shopping cart filled with 16 stop signs down the road. They ended up in a salvage yard, where the man was trading 16 signs for $28. Police broke up the deal and arrested Timothy Rorie, 42, of Durham.

He was charged with injury to real property, felony larceny and obtaining property by false pretenses.

Authorities havent found the 34 remaining signs.
