Cablevision Systems Chief Undergoes Heart Bypass Surgery

Oct. 18--Two days after he was admitted to a hospital, Cablevision Systems Corp. chief executive James Dolan underwent successful heart bypass surgery yesterday afternoon, the company said.

"The doctors expect a full and complete recovery and the resumption of normal activity," the company said in a statement.

Dolan's doctors reported "no unusual occurrences," according to Cablevision, which declined to reveal such details as the name of the hospital, the extent of the bypass surgery, how long the surgery took, when he is expected to leave the hospital or the suspected causes of the 50-year-old CEO's heart condition.

Dolan, who lives in Oyster Bay, drove himself to a hospital on Saturday.

The hospitalization comes at a time when Dolan, who is also chairman of Madison Square Garden and its Knicks and Rangers, has a full schedule of corporate activity ahead.

The Dolan family, which controls Bethpage-based Cablevision, is planning to spin off its Rainbow Media sports and programming division, including the Garden and the AMC and Women's Entertainment cable channels, and then take the rest of the company private under a $7.9-billion plan.

A special committee of independent directors is reviewing that plan, which would make Dolan chairman of Rainbow, while his father, Charles, would remain chairman of Cablevision, the biggest cable service provider in the metropolitan area.

Also, the Garden is preparing for a major renovation, although at the same time it is considering a proposal to move across Eighth Avenue to part of the renovated James A. Farley Post Office complex.
