AppSense Extends Application Manager Beyond the Desktop With HP; Integrated Software Solution Offers Server Protection and License Control

AppSense, a specialist in system security and application management, today announced that its Application Manager will be integrated into HP's security software suite for Microsoft Windows(R) servers and terminal servers.
The integrated product, HP ProtectTools Application Manager, is available today and is expected to be popular with enterprise customers looking to lock down their server environments and gain centralized control over server-based software licensing. This follows on the successful integration of Application Manager with HP security software for the desktop.
Application Manager protects Windows systems from the introduction of malicious applications, such as spyware, hacking tools and executable-borne viruses. It will provide an additional security component to the HP ProtectTools suite by preventing the introduction of untrustworthy, untested and insecure applications by end users. By controlling which end-point client devices access particular applications at any time, HP ProtectTools Application Manager also provides secure control and auditing that can slash licensing costs in a Windows terminal services environment.
"Having proven the value of zero-day protection with Application Manager on the desktop, we're excited to provide application-level host intrusion prevention capabilities on Windows terminal servers," said Anthony Bolland, VP corporate development, AppSense. "Application Manager is already extremely popular with AppSense's customers in the server market, and we anticipate demand to be equally strong from the new users."
"Maintaining system integrity, preventing the introduction of malicious executables and controlling licensing costs are all challenges faced by customers," commented Steve Godfrey, business manager, Secure Solutions - UK and Ireland, HP. "AppSense has produced a robust and proven product that meets the high technology standards that HP demands."
Software licensing can present a major issue in server-based computing environments where some vendors require that a license has to be purchased for every client device capable of accessing a server on which an application is hosted, regardless of how many users actually access the application. HP ProtectTools Application Manager solves this issue by operating a kernel-level filter driver that intercepts all file execution requests to determine if the request is authorized or not. Any unauthorized requests are blocked and the user receives a message, configurable by the administrator, stating that execution has been denied. This granular control over application access has been approved by Microsoft as an effective software license management method.
Integrating the server version of AppSense Application Manager into the HP ProtectTools suite will complement an existing set of capabilities that address multiple security threats, including identity theft, phishing, data confidentiality and mobile security. First and second line support will be provided to customers by HP with third line support provided by AppSense.
