18,500 Acres in Wolf River Area of Langlade County to Be Permanently Conserved

A special ceremony marking the permanent conservation of more than 18,500 acres of property near Wolf River in eastern Langlade County, Wis., will be held on Wednesday, October 19. The ceremony will begin at 12 p.m. at the property, which is located about 20 miles northeast of Antigo.

In addition to representatives from Plum Creek, attendees expected at the ceremony include Governor Jim Doyle and Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources Secretary Scott Hassett, as well as representatives from the Trust for Public Land and the Ice Age Park and Trail Foundation.

The Wolf River property is important to both recreationalists and conservationists who will continue to use the land for hunting, fishing, hiking, bird-watching and other outdoor activities. It includes frontage on the banks of Nine Mile Creek and the Lily River. It also includes Tyra Lake and a six-mile segment of the Ice Age Trail, which follows the path of the last glacier that cut through Wisconsin thousands of years ago.

Directions to Wolf River property:

North of Antigo: At the intersection of Highway 64 and Highway 45 (Walgreen’s drugstore on the west side and Refuge Restaurant on the east side), turn right on Highway 64 and travel east for approximately 6.8 miles until you come to the intersection of Highway 64 and County Highway S. Turn left on County Highway S and go north for approximately 3 miles until you come to the intersection of Highway 52 and County Highway S. Travel on Highway 52 (road is straight and then makes a hard right) for approximately 6.2 miles until you reach Kent Road. This will be on the right side of Highway 52. Travel for .3 mile and look for a truck entrance road on the right — “Upper Fire Lane.” There is no name sign on the highway. Turn right on the Upper Fire Lane.
