Intel Resumes Shipping Latest Pentium 4

Posted on: Tuesday, 22 April 2003, 06:00 CDT

SAN JOSE, Calif. (AP) -- Intel Corp. on Monday resumed shipping its latest Pentium 4 processor, which was delayed after engineers spotted a potential problem.

The 3-gigahertz chip, which was supposed to be widely available April 14, was pulled at the last minute after the problem was uncovered during testing.

Computer makers who already have the chip in stock have been sent a software fix.

"The issue was seen only in the lab environment on a small percentage of the total number of units," said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.

The delayed chip is different from its predecessors in that its system bus runs at 800 megahertz compared with 533 megahertz in older chips. The system bus shuttles data between the processor and memory.

The new processor is priced at $417 when sold in batches of 1,000.

On Sunday, Intel dropped the price of its 3.06 GHz Pentium 4 to $401 from $589, a decrease of 32 percent. Such moves are not unusual after the chip giant releases new processors.

Shares in Intel fell 1 cent to close at $18.65 each in trading Monday on the Nasdaq Stock Market.
