Oct. 19--Computer Associates International Inc. continued its software-company buying spree Monday with the acquisition of e-mail security and storage developer iLumin Software Services Inc.
CA declined to specify what it paid for privately held iLumin of Reston, Va., but it said the transaction was an all-cash deal.
CA said it intends to retain the majority of iLumin's 105 employees, most of whom are based at its headquarters in Reston, CA spokesman Michael Kornspan said.
CA plans to operate the company as a division of its storage business, reporting to Chris Broderick, senior vice president and general manager. Kornspan said CA's BrightStor division shares some customers with iLumin but the two product lines don't overlap. They'll now be integrated.
The acquisition is one of a half-dozen CA has completed since last year, including another e-mail security firm, Qurb Inc., antispyware firm PestPatrol, corporate IT governance software firm Niku, security software developer Netegrity and network service software developer Concord Communications.
The buying spree is intended to strengthen CA's position in the core markets of corporate system management, security and storage software.
CA chief executive John Swainson indicated that the company's acquisitions this year will continue apace, according to trade newspaper ComputerWorld.
"It wouldn't surprise me if by the end of the year we did five or six or seven hundred million [dollars worth of acquisitions]," ComputerWorld reported last week. "We have technology in [applications management], but we aren't completely comfortable that we have the right products in all the right subcategories. So we're looking hard at build-versus-buy in that space."
