MarketWatch Launches MarketWatch Live Quotes for Investors on Its Web Site
Posted on: Wednesday, 19 October 2005, 09:00 CDT
MarketWatch, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of Dow Jones & Company, today announced the launch of MarketWatch Live Quotes, a product that offers investors a new and easy way to track their portfolios and see market data. MW Live Quotes is one of several enhancements that MarketWatch has undertaken in the past month, solidifying its commitment to providing market-moving editorial content and building leading tools for the investment audience.
MW Live Quotes automatically updates stock-quote information without users having to refresh their Web browsers. It will be available in three specific areas of MarketWatch: Story pages, Quote pages and the My Portfolios area. For example, when a user is reading a story, whether it was published today or a year ago, he or she will get a current quote for the symbols mentioned in the articles. MW Live Quotes also will be available on Portfolio Tracker, an existing application that enables investors to easily track investments, markets and securities. Now, it will be easier for MarketWatch users to be updated continuously on the stocks they track in their portfolios.
"MW Live Quotes is yet another example of the valuable content tools that are available to our investor audience," said Nathan Richardson, senior vice president and general manager, Dow Jones Online. "Dow Jones is committed to keeping MarketWatch a leading business and finance destination, and we will continue to innovate by introducing unique, compelling and essential investing products and content--now and in the future."
MW Live Quotes is the first of several cutting-edge applications that MarketWatch intends to release using AJAX technology being leveraged by major search companies and others.
"This application allows us to create an event-driven, dynamic experience with millions of users," said Jamie Thingelstad, chief technology officer, MarketWatch. "Delivering quote data over this channel is only the start of a new breed of applications for the financial vertical."
MarketWatch has developed proprietary systems that leverage the open technology in Web browsers to make this service available on such a large scale. Recently, MarketWatch has added some key features to its site to continue to make investing easier for its users.
-- Podcasting - MarketWatch has four podcasts--Morning Stock Talk, Stupid Investment of the Week, Personal MarketWatch and Internet Daily--that currently have thousands of listeners who have taken advantage of their wide range of content.
-- In addition, MarketWatch is adding new columns to the award-winning site. MarketWatch continues to originate the only freely available and market-based, real-time business and investment news with more stories than the nearest free site.
-- "Corner Office" - Provides the latest news about corporate leaders as well as interviews (video, audio and written) from MarketWatch, The Wall Street Journal Online and The Wall Street Journal Online Network of sites*.
-- "Writing on the Wall" - A weekly column on Wall Street written by David Weidner.
-- "Commodities Corner" - A weekly column on commodities written by Myra Picache.
-- "Getting Technical" - Michael Kahn contributes a column on markets and sectors that appears on the first trading day of every month as part of MarketWatch's popular "Trading Strategies" investment section.
-- MarketWatch is strategically re-invigorating the advertising platform by introducing leading graphical advertising units and compelling video-advertising placements in addition to removing underperforming advertisements such as the background wallpaper.
-- Polling - Launched recently, the polling tool offers MarketWatch users the opportunity to interact with the Web by providing their thoughts and opinions on specific topics.
-- RSS - MarketWatch is one of the few Web sites that offers its users the ability to create custom RSS news feeds based on symbols in their portfolio. This allows them to keep up to date on stocks of interest to them.
