Oct. 19--TOKYO -- Sony Corp. plans to put a big-screen, high-resolution rear-projection television set on the domestic market next year, Sony officials said Wednesday.
The new product will be equipped with Sony's proprietary "SXRD" display device to show high-definition TV programs, they said.
The TV is expected to be 50 inches or bigger.
Sony released a 70-inch rear projection TV in March but has failed to arouse strong demand due to its high price of 1.68 million yen.
In the United States, the company has captured some 50 percent of the market for rear-projection TVs due to strong sales of 50- and 60-inch models it released in August.
