Helios aircraft interrupts flight to Birmingham

NICOSIA, Oct. 19 (Xinhua) — An Helios Airways Boeing 737-800 that was flying to Birmingham returned to Larnaca Airport on Wednesday after indications of a technical fault flashed on its controls, the airline said.

In a statement, Helios noted the pilot decided to return to Larnaca Airport where he landed the aircraft in safety without any problem.

“The plane returned as a precautionary measure after a warning signal in the cockpit indicating a possible technical fault to one of the systems,” said Helios.

It added that the airline’s engineers are in communication with their Boeing counterparts and that the “engineers faithfully follow the repairs and maintenance guidelines of Boeing”.

An Helios Boeing 737 crashed into a hillside north of Athens on Aug. 14, killing all 121 people on board, mostly Cypriots.

Meanwhile, head of the Greek Investigating Commission of Air Accidents and Incidents Akrivos Tsolakis said that in the middle of next week the examination on the remains of the Helios aircraft which were taken to the US will be completed.

He also said that the commission examined the scenario of the re- enactment of the flight which is very complicated.
