High Point, N.C.-Based Furniture Retailer Urges Better Performance in Exports

Oct. 19--HIGH POINT -- Voicing concern while trying to be upbeat at the same time, Charlie Greene pointed out that North Carolina's furniture export effort is a small dot in the global picture.

Greene, president of Classic Gallery Inc. based in High Point, is chairman of the N.C. Furnishings Export Council.

At a meeting of the faithful Tuesday, Greene urged his colleagues to "make our presence in foreign shows more meaningful" and told them to spread the message that "we must present our products properly."

The state's Department of Commerce representatives are working with 12 other states -- 30 to 40 furnishings companies, according to Jeremy Ruff, director of the N.C. Furniture Export Office -- to ensure stronger presence at overseas markets, particularly Furniture China in Shanghai in September 2006.

Ruff noted that North Carolina's furniture exports this year are up 14.5 percent over last, with upholstery leading at 20 percent, followed by bedding at 18 percent and casegoods at 10 percent.

The message from Tuesday's meeting: Present more quality home furnishings products from North Carolina and the United States at all significant foreign furniture shows.
