Oct. 21--TOKYO -- Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. said Friday it has received a $190 million order to build a passenger transport system at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport by teaming up with Sumitomo Corp. and two U.S. allies.
The 2.4-kilometer automated transport system at the state capital of Georgia will connect the terminal building's concourse with a rental car facility via a convention center, according to the heavy machinery maker.
Under the contract, the four business partners will design, construct and supply the system, called an automated people mover. It includes driverless rubber-wheel vehicles, a signal system and associated facilities.
The U.S. allies are Atlanta-based general construction firms Archer Western Contractors Ltd. and Capital Contracting Co.
The airport is replacing the current bus system with the new system to deal with a growing number of users of the airport and nearby facilities. It will be completed around October 2008.
The contract marks the fifth people-mover order Mitsubishi Heavy has received from overseas airport operators, following orders from South Korea's Incheon International Airport and Dubai International Airport.
