By Kyodo News International, Tokyo

Oct. 21--NEW YORK -- Worldwide mobile phone shipments reached a quarterly record high of 208.3 million units in the three months through September, International Data Corp. said Thursday.

That represented a rise of 19.1 percent, compared with the same period a year earlier, the U.S. information-technology market research company said. The record figure is attributable to highly functional, multimedia-compatible new models launched in the European market, it said.

Nokia Corp. of Finland held the largest share of the world market at 32.0 percent, followed by U.S.-based Motorola Inc. with 18.6 percent.

South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co. came third with 12.9 percent and LG Electronics Inc. fourth with 7.4 percent, followed by Japanese-Swedish joint venture Sony Ericsson Mobile Communications AB with 6.6 percent.

Each of those companies posted record high shipments in the reporting period.
