Cable, Wireless and VoIP Companies Look to Increase Penetration
within Markets Traditionally Served by Phone Companies
Telephia, the leading provider of performance measurement information to the communications industry, launches Total Voice Share (TVS) which measures service provider share at a market level across all voice services including wireless, landline, cable phone and VoIP. Debuting in the San Diego, Los Angeles, and Charlotte, NC markets in Q4 2005, and ramping up to 25 cities in 2006, Telephia Total Voice Share is built on the company's patented technology which has produced the wireless industry's most accurate market-share measurement since 1998.
Telephia Total Voice Share will track all providers, including wireless carriers, traditional phone companies (e.g., BellSouth, SBC, Verizon, AT&T, etc.), cable companies (e.g., Cox, Comcast, Time Warner Cable, etc.), and pure-play VoIP providers (e.g., Vonage, AT&T CallVantage, etc.). The data breaks out residential and business subscribers and will report granular market share data within each service provider's own geographical footprint area.
"The communications market is being redefined by wireless substitution, IP telephony and industry restructuring," said Kanishka Agarwal, Vice President of New Products, Telephia. "Consumers' communications needs, traditionally only served by the Bell companies, are now also served by cable, wireless, and VoIP companies."
According to Telephia, wireless substitution is gaining significant traction, with nearly 14 percent of wireless subscribers citing that their mobile phone is their only phone line. 18-24 year olds have the highest wireless substitution rates among various age groups, with 30 percent of them noting that their wireless phone is their only phone line. In addition, Telephia reports a strong interest among households in adopting phone services from their cable provider. Forty-one percent of high-tech households surveyed said they would subscribe to home landline phone services from their cable company, while 36 percent said they would subscribe to wireless phone services from their cable provider.
"Telecommunications companies are waging a fierce battle to provide all of the household communications needs in one bundle, and it is critical for the competitors to have a comprehensive and independent view of market share," added Agarwal.
Cable Companies Make Inroads
According to Telephia Total Voice Share, RBOCs have the market leadership positions in landline phone services in San Diego and Charlotte, as expected (see Table 1). However, cable company Cox Communications has succeeded in capturing a 12 percent share in San Diego. In contrast, Charlotte remains dominated by BellSouth and the other incumbent carriers such as Alltel, CT Communications, and Rockhill Communications. Table 1: Landline and Cable Phone Market Share for San Diego and Charlotte, NC ---------------------------------------------------------------------- San Diego Charlotte Market Market Provider Share (%) Provider Share (%) ----------------------------------- --------------------------------- SBC 59% BellSouth 52% Cox Communications 12% Alltel 10% AT&T 6% CT Communications 10% North County Communications 5% Rockhill Communications 7% 01 Communications 4% US LEC 4% ----------------------------------- --------------------------------- Source: Telephia Total Voice Share Report, June/August 2005 Note: Markets cover the greater metro areas. Market share is based on share of active telephone numbers and reflects both business and residential lines. Charlotte data is from June 2005. San Diego data is from August 2005.
