NuView's Data on Demand Manager Selected By IT Architect Magazine As One of the Ten Most Promising New Backup and Recovery Products

Posted on: Tuesday, 25 October 2005, 12:00 CDT

DDM Enables Faster, More Reliable Recovery from Disk-based Backups

NuView, Inc.(R), a leading provider of solutions designed to simplify enterprise data management, today announced that IT Architect Magazine recently selected NuView product Data on Demand Manager(TM) (DDM) as one of the ten "most note- and market-worthy" backup and recovery products in the disk-to-disk category. (The article is available online at: http://www.itarchitect.com/blog/archives/003395.html.)

According to Penny Lunt Crosman, Senior Technology Editor, IT Architect Magazine, "To help our readers navigate the overwhelming array of backup and recovery products and technologies introduced this year, IT Architect chose to highlight solutions with the most promising innovations and overall architecture."

NuView introduced DDM in September of this year to address an often overlooked problem in IT environments: data recovery. While there are many solutions on the market today that address backup, very few are designed to solve the more urgent problem of recovering data following an outage or failure. During a recent interview with IT Architect's Crosman, Gartner analyst Ray Paquet stated, "I don't care if you can back my data up or not. I only care if you can recover it. Backup doesn't matter ... the key is that backup is just a means for recovery, and it's recovery that matters."

NuView's DDM facilitates the speedy restoration of file data (full and partial restores) during disaster recovery and migration scenarios; reducing recovery time objectives (RTO) and downtime from hours or days to minutes. DDM enables users to access data on a new primary in minutes as opposed to traditional methods that take hours or days. When a primary server is brought down or fails, DDM automatically scans the backup copy of the data on the secondary device and rapidly populates the new or recovered primary with mini-files of the data. (A mini-file is essentially a "shell" of the file; it contains all of the metadata associated with the file but it does not include the file content.) Users are then re-directed to the new or recovered primary and individual files are restored at the exact moment users request or access the files. As a result, users have near-immediate access to their data following an outage and the IT infrastructure is not impacted. DDM also enables administrators to quickly restore failed systems to a specified point-in-time without taking hours to manually rebuild and restore data from tape backup or reinstalling from scratch.

DDM's rapid restoration of data can also be used to dramatically reduce the time required to migrate data from old file servers to NAS devices. Current migration methods are often time-consuming, complicated and cause downtime which interrupt user access to data and business operations. DDM changes the migration paradigm. With DDM, users can migrate to NAS devices in minutes thereby changing the way enterprises think about and conduct migrations.

"NuView is honored that our newest product is already receiving industry recognition," said Rahul Mehta, CEO, NuView, Inc. "DDM addresses one of the most critical and often overlooked problems faced by enterprises today. In combination with backup solutions provided by leading vendors, DDM enables organizations to significantly reduce their RTO and will rapidly become a fundamental necessity for ensuring efficient, reliable business continuity strategies."
