Oct. 26--The East Grand Forks School District will get $108,683 to buy computers, computer software and service as part of a settlement in a class action lawsuit against Microsoft.
If the school can come up with another $28,000, it will be able to get "completely up to speed" on technology, including replacing 250 of its oldest computers, he said.
"We're excited about this," Aanenson said. "It's really going to help us at a time when we really need to be able to update our technology."
The district plans to use half the money to buy computers and half for software and service, he said. Currently, the district has about 485 computers.
Some of the computers it will replace are seven to eight years old.
Aanenson said the school expects to get final approval of the settlement money in December, and to begin purchasing computers in January.
The lawsuit, brought by Minnesota consumers and business owners who claimed Microsoft overcharged for some of its software, was settled in April 2004. About half the money, estimated at $50 million, wasn't claimed, and was distributed to school districts throughout the state.
