Horry Gives Boat Landings a Leg Up

Oct. 27--Boating is popular on the coast and along its rivers, and Horry County is upgrading boat landings as fast as it can to keep up with demand.
The county, fourth highest in the state for boat registrations, takes care of 31 landings that require frequent revamping.
The county last week received preliminary permit approvals to upgrade Red Bluff Landing on the Waccamaw River near Longs and Sandy Bluff Landing on the Little Pee Dee River near Nichols.
Work is scheduled soon to improve Pitch Landing on the Waccamaw River south of Conway and Lee's Landing on the Waccamaw River north of Conway.
Improvements recently were completed on Pitts, Punchbowl, Jordan Lake, Hughes, Rosewood and Savannah Bluff landings, county spokeswoman Lisa Bourcier said.
Boat landings are an import ant part of public access to the public waterways and the county is doing well to try to improve them, Waccamaw Riverkeeper Hamp Shuping said.
"They're very popular, especially during the summer," Shuping said.
The improvements the county has made, often with the aid of state funds, have been helpful, he said.
"Some of the upgrades they've done have been very, very nice," Shuping said.
Red Bluff, a well-used facility on Secondary Road 31, has a damaged single-lane ramp, Bourcier said.
The ramp will be replaced with a double-lane one, and a new courtesy dock will be installed.
The county got a $24,500 grant for the work from Ocean and Coastal Resource Management, a division of the state Department of Health and Environmental Control.
The county matched the grant and the county's Parks and Recreation Division will pay the remaining $30,000, Bourcier said.
"It always makes it easier when you get a grant," Bourcier said.
Shuping said Red Bluff gets a lot of use and "it would be a huge help" to have a larger ramp.
There currently is no money for the Sandy Bluff improvement but the county wanted to get the permits in hand, Bourcier said.
"At Sandy Bluff, they have a wooden dock and a one-lane ramp, but it's in pretty poor condition," she said.
Shuping said the county needs to plan for more landings. He said he is disappointed plans for a landing on the Intracoastal Waterway near the former Myrtle Beach Air Force Base have come to a standstill.
The city was going to build a facility there, but the project has stalled because cost estimates exceeded the available money.
"We need a landing on the waterway desperately," Shuping said.
