TelCove Launches 10-Gigabit Ethernet Service for Metropolitan Area Configurations

Posted on: Monday, 31 October 2005, 09:00 CST

PITTSBURGH, Pa., Oct. 31 /PRNewswire/ -- TelCove, a leading provider of business critical telecommunications services to enterprise customers and carriers, today announced the availability of 10-Gigabit (Gbps) Ethernet service for metropolitan area configurations. TelCove's offering represents a tenfold increase in its Ethernet service throughput and provides customers with dedicated point-to-point connectivity between locations within each of TelCove's 70 markets in the Eastern United States. The service is available to enterprise customers and as a last-mile solution to carriers. TelCove is the only large-scale integrated communications provider to offer 10-Gigabit Ethernet in all markets served.

While Ethernet has become widely popular in many industries as a transport facility within the enterprise, very few telecommunications service providers have been able to offer this level of dedicated, ultra-high bandwidth connectivity to customers. This new 10-Gigabit Ethernet offering will round- out the available bandwidth options for TelCove customers choosing to implement metro Ethernet solutions. TelCove's available bandwidth options now range between 10 Mbps and 10 Gbps. This new performance flexibility offers enterprise and carriers numerous options for implementation and scale with minimized complexity. Utilizing TelCove's fiber-optic intercity network infrastructure, customers can now use TelCove's Ethernet services to deliver their voice, data and Internet services throughout TelCove's extensive 70- market network running throughout the Eastern United States.

TelCove's 10-Gigabit Ethernet offering is well suited for applications and/or industries requiring very high capacity throughput for connecting geographically dispersed locations. Disparate industries will benefit from these service offerings and the connectivity they provide. Some examples of how 10 Gbps would be utilized include:

-- Disaster recovery services utilizing remote file backup and database replication; -- Enterprises interconnecting LANs at multiple locations within the same TelCove market; -- Local, State and Government organizations deploying large-volume image and file sharing services; -- Engineering and construction firms utilizing distributed CAD collaboration applications; -- Healthcare facilities transmitting high resolution MRIs and X-rays and performing medical file sharing and remote diagnosis; and -- Educational facilities supporting multimedia distance learning and file sharing.

"Today's announcement of 10G Metro Ethernet Service is the latest example of TelCove's commitment to our enterprise customers who demand premium services, improved performance and superior service quality," said Craig Drinkhall, senior vice president of product development and engineering at TelCove. "Our customers are looking for forward-thinking solutions that provide ubiquitous connectivity from the enterprise LAN through the transport network. Additionally, our new 10G Metro Ethernet does just that and is well- suited for applications requiring very high capacity."

TelCove's new 10-Gigabit Ethernet services will utilize the company's existing fully protected fiber-optic infrastructure as its primary transport facility, assuring continuous up-time to customers and backed by 100% Service Level Agreements (SLAs). With TelCove's metro DWDM architecture, the company can offer "self-healing" network reliability and the performance scalability needed by some customers without increasing the complexity of network management. Additionally, customers with the need for 10-Gbps Ethernet are no longer required to purchase expensive dedicated circuits and additional customer-owned transport equipment for point-to-point connections. TelCove can cost-effectively offer these services while also managing, maintaining and monitoring the network at all times.

"All types of enterprises increasingly are migrating away from legacy data services toward high performance Ethernet services like TelCove's because they offer an attractive combination of high scalability, reliability, and ease of use at competitive prices," said Stan Hubbard of telecom research firm Heavy Reading.

From his recently published Ethernet marketplace analysis, "Ethernet Services Carrier Scorecard: North America," Mr. Hubbard states, "The Ethernet market will put pressure on operators to differentiate their services in terms of performance, coverage area, pricing and ease of use. Our research indicates TelCove is one of a relatively small number of operators that offer 10G Metro Ethernet services today in a large number of U.S. markets -- putting the company in a highly competitive position to address higher-end market demands."

With today's announcement, TelCove further enhances its array of Ethernet, IP/VPN, VoIP, and BC/DR (Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery) services. These services align with TelCove's strategy to provide next generation communication transport and services to continually improve enterprise efficiency and productivity.
