Philippines orders radio stations to play more indigenous music

MANILA, Oct. 31 (Xinhua) -- Philippine president Gloria Macapagal- Arroyo urged nation-wide music radio stations to regularly play original Philippine music in their programs, the government's press office told Xinhua on Monday.

The official requirement for the music radios to comply with was made through a government directive, issued by president Arroyo herself, according to officials of the press office.

Arroyo issued Memorandum Order No. 913 last weekend, directing the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) to ensure the strict compliance of all radio stations with musical format program with Executive Order NO. 255, which was issued on July 25, 1987.

The order requires all radio stations to broadcast a minimum of four original Philippine music compositions in every clock hour of a program with a musical format.

President Arroyo said that the 1987 constitution provides that the state shall conserve, promote and popularize the nation's historical and cultural heritage and resources as well as artistic creations.

In issuing the order, the president noted the need to promote the talent of Filipino musical composers to foster the preservation, enrichment and evolution of original Philippine music compositions.

To ensure the growth of Filipino composers, musicians and producers, Arroyo said it was imperative that radio stations provide regular airplay to Philippine music compositions in their programs.

The president also asked the NTC to work closely with the private sector to ensure the mandatory playing in radio stations.

Philippines' numerous FM radio stations are prosperous and profitable in the major cities, such as Metro Manila, especially for broadcast of western style popular songs. The original Philippine music can hardly be heard throughout their daily programs.
