Xelor Software CTO to Speak at ICT WA 2005 on Commercializing Institutional Research to Launch a Successful Startup Company

Posted on: Tuesday, 1 November 2005, 12:00 CST

Xelor Software(TM) today announced that John Siliquini, chief technology officer, will speak on commercializing institutional research to launch a successfully startup company at the Information and Communications Technology in Western Australia 2005 Conference. The ICT WA 2005 Conference, to be held on Nov. 18 at the Perth Convention Exhibition Center, covers advances in the information and communications industries with a focus on innovation in Western Australia.

With a distinguished technical career that includes five pending patents, more than 40 journal articles, and a Ph.D. from the University of Western Australia, Siliquini was instrumental in defining service quality management (SQM), a new category of software that ensures the reliability, performance and quality of enterprise IP telephony systems.

During his presentation at ICT WA, Siliquini will use Xelor Software as a case study to describe the process of transforming institutional research and development projects into commercial successes, including the use of market information and industry expertise to continually influence the product development strategy. The talk will be particularly informative for anyone interested in developing an early stage corporate structure that is attractive to professional venture capital investors.

The core research for Xelor Software's SQM software was undertaken at the ATcrc in Perth, where Siliquini, then a principal research fellow at the University of Western Australia, worked on joint networking projects. Leveraging prior experience focusing on Quality of Service (QoS) issues for ATM networks, Siliquini and the initial engineering team applied the maturing standards for Class of Service for Layer 2 networks and Differentiated Service for Layer 3 networks to the converged voice and data network.

In September 2002, the original team founded Cortec Systems, the predecessor to Xelor Software. Working with the support of the Western Australian Telecommunication Research Institute (WATRI), they developed a prototype that addressed the unreliable call quality that was the major barrier to the adoption of IP telephony. By the fall of 2003, the company had raised $4.6 million from three Australian venture capital firms to further product development.

Two years later, in the fall of 2004, Cortec Systems was relaunched in the United States as Xelor Software. Recently Xelor attracted an additional $6 million in venture capital to fund company growth, continued product development and the launch of the company's XelorRate software for ensuring the reliability, performance and quality of enterprise IP telephony systems.
