Holiday Flights Added for Soldiers

US Airways is wishing soldiers at Fort Gordon a Merry Christmas with a batch of added flights in and out of Augusta.

The airline announced Wednesday that it will operate two more round-trip flights between Charlotte and the Garden City on Dec. 20 and Jan. 4 - the dates when Fort Gordon lets its personnel out for the holidays and then expects them back on post.

One of the new flights will be aboard a 50-seat DeHavilland Dash 8-300, and the other will be on a 37-seat DeHavilland Dash 8-100. Normally the carrier uses 37-seaters for its Augusta flights, according to US Airways spokeswoman Amy Kudwa.

She said five existing flights on Dec. 20 and five on Jan. 4 also will be upgraded to the larger planes, which will translate to a 42 percent increase in passenger capacity.

Naturally, any traveler can take advantage of the increased service, Ms. Kudwa said, but the changes were made with Fort Gordon personnel specifically in mind.

"We know that there's an influx of outbound fliers in December and inbound in January, and we generally do respond to travel demand," Ms. Kudwa said.

"Any customer can purchase these tickets, but they were added to accommodate Fort Gordon."

The new flights from Augusta depart at 2 and 3:55 p.m., arriving about an hour later, and the extra flights returning to Augusta leave Charlotte at 12:35 and 2:30 p.m.
