SPRINT NEXTEL SERVICE RESTORATION NEARLY COMPLETE IN FLORIDA; LESS THAN ONE PERCENT OF LOCAL TELEPHONE SERVICE CUSTOMERS STILL IMPACTED; SIGNIFICANT PROGRESS MADE IN RESTORING WIRELESS SERVICE TO SOUTHEAST FLORIDA
Sprint Nextel (NYSE:S) today announced that technicians and engineers, working around the clock, have nearly completed restoration of wireless and wireline networks in south Florida. The company estimated that 2,100 local access lines remain out of service, representing less than one percent of the company's approximately 2 million local access lines in Florida. To date, Sprint Nextel crews have restored more than 120,000 customer access lines.
More than 90 percent of the wireless networks are currently operational in south Florida. The bulk of the wireless network restoration is complete in southwest Florida and recovery is now focused on the southeast coast, primarily in Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, Monroe, Martin and St. Lucie counties where power outages remain an issue.
"The Sprint Nextel teams of technicians and engineers hit the ground running as soon as the storm passed and have made tremendous strides in restoring service," remarked Charles Rehwinkel, state vice president, Florida for Sprint Nextel. "Although we still ask that local telephone business and residential customers notify us of any outages they're experiencing."
While most of the local telephone service outages due to power issues have been fixed, Sprint Nextel relies on customers to report a lack of dial tone, which may indicate issues with the wireline system. Customers can call 1-800-788-3600 or visit www.sprint.com to report service issues.
Due to network impact as a result of Hurricane Wilma, effective Oct. 25, standard service installation and repair intervals for local service has been extended within Sprint Nextel's central and south Florida areas. During this period, Sprint Nextel's Service Guarantee Program was temporarily suspended. Sprint Nextel is working tirelessly to restore service impacted by Hurricane Wilma's damage and appreciates customers' patience and understanding during this time. Sprint Nextel will notify the public when normal operations resume.
