Irkutsk, 3 November: Reconstruction of Gorkhon station - which is crucial for transporting oil to China and the [Russian] Far East - has been completed on the Trans-Siberian railway, the East-Siberian railway directorate - a subsidiary of Russian Railways - told ITAR- TASS today.
Gorkhon station is located on the Tsagan-Daban mountain pass in the Baykal region. In order to handle oil trains the platforms had to be extended, points replaced and the overhead system, electricity network, signal network and communications network had to be updated. A total of R100m was spent. Trains weighing 6,000 tonnes or more can now be accommodated.
[Passage omitted: previous upgrades]
This year a total of R1.4bn has been allocated for developing the mainline infrastructure of the East-Siberian railway. This is expected to allow oil shipments to China to be increased from 6m tonnes in 2004 to 15m in 2006.
