Adaptable IP-based convergence platform
TO address the convergence of video, voice and data in a single platform, Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) has unveiled locally the HiPath 4000.
The system, according to Siemens, is an Internet protocol (IP) convergence platform that allows multimedia applications to run in fixed- line networks such as video, voice and data.
The company’s vice president of enterprise networks David Toh said with the HiPath 4000, users could benefit from an IP-based communications system without disposing their existing circuit- based communications systems.
This, he explained, is because the HiPath 4000 is based on an open standard platform, which allows the system to be flexible and adaptable, thus enabling enterprises to choose applications that suit their needs.
The system can work with other communications systems, thus relieving problems of compatibility between existing and new system components, he added.
“The HiPath 4000 supports distributed IP architecture, thus offering the benefits of scalability, migration path, increased productivity and resource savings,” Toh said during the product launch in Petaling Jaya.
A unique feature of the HiPath 4000 is a built-in forecasting tool that can generate traffic reports which show the peak hours of a call centre and whether there are enough operators.
Locally developed applications such as Traffic Tracker and Call Tracker are also deployed in the HiPath 4000. The applications enable operators to monitor the number of calls coming in throughout the day and identify where the calls are from.
Another feature, Auto Fault System, notifies the operator when there is a breakdown in any part of the system.
A locally developed application to be made available within two months is Call Treatment. This helps to automatically route calls to specific departments based on the caller’s ID.
The HiPath 4000 family consists of three models – the HiPath 4300, HiPath 4500 and HiPath 4900. The HiPath 4300 and 4500 models support up to 2,000 and 12,000 users respectively while the 4900 supports up to 30,000 users. Currently, the HiPath 4300 and 4500 models are available.
The HiPath 4000 is targeted at the telecommunications, banking, hospitality and manufacturing sectors. Toh said the system is designed for all type of enterprises.
With the new system, Siemens hopes to capture 10 per cent of the convergence market, which is estimated to be worth RM300 million. Toh said the HiPath 4000 will be implemented in most of the Ministries by year-end. An automotive manufacturer has also shown interest in the system.
During the product launch, Siemens also unveiled the optiPoint 600 Office, an IP-based fixed-line phone that comes with a touch screen and wireless application protocol (WAP) capabilities.
The optiPoint 600 Office is a multi-function communications terminal that supports IP and time division multiplexing (TDM)- controlled communication.
It has a universal serial bus port that enables users to dial directly from their computers without an external modem. The touch screen on the phone functions like a personal digital assistant, and comes with a stylus for easy navigation.
