Continuent, the leading provider of commercial open source middleware solutions for high availability, today announced the widespread endorsement of the open source community for its database virtualization technology. Open source visionaries and industry leaders such as Marten Mickos, MySQL(R) AB; Marc Fleury, JBoss(R); Andy Astor, EnterpriseDB(R); Jamshed Patel, SpikeSource(TM); Michel Gerin, Zend Technologies(TM); Juergen Geck, SuSE Linux(R); and Andrew Aitken, Olliance Group(TM), among others, have all come forward to express their support for Continuent and its breakthrough offering.
"Continuent has developed a set of solutions that addresses what many enterprises need - a cost-effective, reliable way to enable business-critical database applications to stay up-and-running with no downtime," said Marten Mickos, CEO of MySQL AB. "We're pleased that Continuent has expanded its product offerings to support heterogeneous database environments for better scale-out solutions, and that they continue to be a Gold Level MySQL partner."
"JBoss is committed to making open source a safe and reliable choice for the enterprise and we're gratified to see its growing application and the business models evolving around it," said Marc Fleury, chairman and CEO, JBoss, Inc. "As a partner, JBoss welcomes Continuent to our efforts to fuel open source adoption at the enterprise level. With its product offering, Continuent is responding to the realities of enterprises running multiple database environments."
"I am a strong supporter of companies that provide infrastructure to ensure the vitality of the enterprise open source space. Continuent's presence in the category with a robust product line is yet another reason to be optimistic about the growth of open source solutions such as EnterpriseDB," said Andy Astor, president and CEO, EnterpriseDB.
"Continuent is part of a growing ecosystem of innovative companies providing IT departments with sound open source alternatives," said Jamshed Patel, vice president of solutions at SpikeSource. "By providing a heterogeneous solution that works across virtually every environment, Continuent is making an important contribution that will help further the adoption of open source in mission critical environments."
"Zend welcomes Continuent as a new open source project for simple clustering configuration. Projects like Continuent strengthen Zend's new open source Collaboration initiative involving the community and partners," said Michel Gerin, vice president of marketing for Zend Technologies, Inc. "The new and more robust offering will complement our Production Server offering, Zend Platform, an application management system with full session clustering support for web applications written in PHP."
Juergen Geck, Vice President, SuSE Linux, added, "SuSE welcomes Continuent, the new and exciting commercial open source solution for database high availability and scalability. A middleware solution that works with any database, open source or commercial, to provide enterprise level continuous service is one of the key elements needed in the enterprise for open source to continue its proliferation."
"The use of open source is becoming pervasive. As the adoption continues to accelerate, customer requirements are becoming larger and more complex. As such, it is critical to support open source with a high availability solution such as Continuent's that can work in many enterprise environments. As the leading independent open source strategy consulting firm, we at Olliance Group believe that Continuent is addressing a very important need," said Andrew Aitken, managing partner of the Olliance Group.
"Database heterogeneity is becoming increasingly important as business customers deploy more dynamic Web-based applications," says William Hurley, senior analyst at Data Mobility Group. "Further, with more business customers turning to open source, Continuent is addressing a growing opportunity. People who have proprietary databases feel much more comfortable about considering open source alternatives now that they understand what Continuent is doing and see where Continuent is going."
In the September 2005 Forrester Research report, The Future of DBMS Technology, Senior Analyst Noel Yuhanna writes, "The database management system (DBMS) and middleware market will develop over the next four years to support information fabric and virtualize access to heterogeneous data. In the report he also states that, "Both of these trends will combine to offer an evolutionary path to a future world of information management in which all forms of information will be much easier to access, integrate and control at a lower cost."
Continuent's open-source based middleware, launched Nov. 1, works with all major databases, delivering high availability in virtually any enterprise environment, whether homogenous, heterogeneous, commercial or open source. Continuent abstracts databases, presenting a virtualized database to an application and ensuring peace of mind that mission critical data is accessible at all times. The result is seamless fail-over capabilities with vertical and horizontal scalability and load balancing that are completely transparent to the application layer.
Continuent recently closed its Series B round of funding, led by investment firms Trident Capital, Nordic Venture Partners and Ledstiernan. This round of funding, coupled with earlier investments, brings Continuent's total equity investment to date to $15.75 million.
