Tata Consultancy Services Helps Enterprises Stay Agile, Flexible and Keep Pace With New Microsoft Technologies

Posted on: Monday, 7 November 2005, 12:00 CST

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Tata Consultancy Services, a leading global IT services firm, today reinforced its commitment to Microsoft's newest product lines and announced its early expertise to help customers get higher performance at a lower cost from these new technologies. As an early adopter for Microsoft SQL Server 2005 and Visual Studio 2005 Team System (VSTS), TCS has invested heavily in training and asset creation to help clients adopt these new technologies, as well as BizTalk Server 2006, early on. In addition, TCS is using SQL Server 2005 for its customer contact management solution, CCM.NET, in order to take advantage of the product's enhanced features and improved performance.

TCS has developed early expertise in these new Microsoft technologies through beta phase projects with several customers. TCS assisted organizations including UGS Corp., BT Retail and Microsoft's internal IT group in building IT and business solutions that make extensive use of the new product features. TCS now offers strong capabilities to help customers move to these technologies quickly and cost-effectively.

"TCS historically has delivered great solutions that help our mutual customers get the most out of Microsoft products," said John Montgomery, director in the .NET Developer Product Management Group at Microsoft Corp. "We have been impressed by TCS' commitment to growing its capabilities with these new technologies at such an early stage. This kind of commitment enables them to help organizations migrate quickly and seamlessly to any of our new products."

"We have seen significant interest from customers for Visual Studio 2005 and SQL Server 2005 and we expect adoption rates to be high," said Anita Nanadikar, global head of eBusiness for TCS. We have invested in building strong expertise in these emerging technologies. Using our assets, productivity accelerators, and Microsoft technology focused Solution Centers in US and Europe, we are poised to assist organizations in building solutions with these new technologies. One of our productivity accelerator tools, RECAST, automates the migration of Crystal Reports to SQL Server 2005 Reporting Services, thereby improving productivity and bringing down costs. TCS has also developed tools to assist in the effective migration of databases such as Sybase to SQL Server 2005."

UGS Project

TCS is assisting UGS Corp., a leading global provider of product lifecycle management (PLM) software and services, to extend the server management components of UGS' Teamcenter platform to .NET to meet growing demand. The end result will be a low cost yet scalable platform for mid-market manufacturers. TCS used a distributed environment made possible by the web capabilities of Team Foundation Server, a component of Visual Studio Team System. Features like code analysis, integrated testing framework and code coverage features available within VSTS reduced testing time, while delivering better code quality. This solution has enabled higher team productivity and ease of solution deployment.

"I am impressed by the ability of Microsoft's Visual Studio Team System to provide a complete Application Lifecycle Management solution. The collaboration and extensive testing capabilities within VSTS have enhanced the productivity of our distributed development teams and enabled us to further elevate the quality of our software," said Dave Mitchell, vice president, UGS Office of Architecture & Technology. "TCS' expertise on VSTS has helped us leverage this development platform to meet our aggressive product engineering timelines."

BT Retail Service Delivery Project

With the market for hosted applications in the small-to-medium enterprise market in the United Kingdom expected to top $1.8 billion by 2009, BT Retail needed a new service delivery platform (SDP) that would reduce the cost and complexity of providing value-added services by integrating and unifying existing customer systems and operational systems.

Microsoft and TCS have jointly implemented a SDP based on Microsoft Connected Services Framework and featuring Visual Studio 2005. The SDP will enable BT Retail to dramatically reduce the integration time for new subscriber services with existing systems, such as billing and order management. In its first offering on the platform, BT Retail will provide rich hosted e-mail, shared calendars, and contact management capabilities to small and medium businesses. BT will leverage the platform to deliver additional services to small and medium businesses in the future.

"Our collaboration with TCS on BT Retail's implementation of Connected Services Framework centers on the common goal of enabling BT to introduce new services rapidly and cost-effectively, and to significantly reduce integration challenges," said Michael O'Hara, general manager of marketing, Communications Sector, Microsoft. "This engagement demonstrates TCS' commitment in utilizing the very latest Microsoft technologies, and the combination of Microsoft's platform innovation and TCS' global software delivery model represents a win-win for our customers."

Microsoft IT Project

Microsoft selected TCS to migrate its MS Organization (MSO) database from SQL Server 2000 to SQL Server 2005. MSO's database is one of the largest SQL Server databases in the world hosting Microsoft's worldwide sales and marketing information.

TCS assisted the MSO migration, ultimately increasing the database's performance and business intelligence capabilities. The project is expected to reach completion by the end of November.

"Our strong partnership with TCS was instrumental in successfully migrating to SQL Server 2005," said Tony Ulkekul, client operations owner, sales operations, Microsoft Corporation.

The announcement comes on the heels of Microsoft's Visual Studio 2005 Team System product launch today, where TCS executives were on hand. TCS has a long history of working throughout the Microsoft organization to support customers on a broad range of products, in a wide variety of industries.
